Founded in 1930 when two hotel competitors found themselves having breakfast at the same restaurant, Western Hotels, now Westin Hotels & Resorts, was created when the two decided to form a business alliance.
Western Hotels first opened with seventeen hotels, all but one, being in the state of Washington. The alliance brought about expansion, and in 1954 the first hotel outside the United States opened in Canada. With this opening, Western Hotels became Western International Hotels.
For the company's 50th anniversary, the name was changed again to the current Westin Hotels & Resorts. Today, and especially within the last decade, the company has had a particular focus on expanding globally. Today, Westin Hotels & Resorts are located in 37 countries with 160 hotels.
Westin is credited with introducing the first guest credit cards, 24-hour room service and personal voice mail in each guest room.
After being bought and sold by a few corporations, in 1998 Starwood assumed full ownership of the company. Other Starwood Hotels & Resorts include the following:
Westin prides itself on offering a full sensory experience for its guests, and being a true respite from the stresses of day to day life. This first begins with a signature lobby experience with vivid florals, a signature scent and atmospheric lighting, and continues through the stay with their signature Heavenly amenities, including their signature mattress, as well as spas, dining and fitness facilities. Westin considers this experience, along with their service to be what makes the "Westin Difference."
Employment with Westin Hotels & Resorts opens up a world of opportunity for career growth around the world and within the Starwood Hotel family. With so many Starwood brands, the success an employee experiences at Westin opens the doors of promotion not just within Westin, and but also with other Starwood brands, as well as at a corporate level.
Westin has numerous hotels projected to open in the coming year, with many more projects in the works. This translates into more and more employment opportunities for prospective job seekers. Education and previous experience required will vary from position to position.
In addition to competitive pay and benefits, Westin has a recognition program to reward employees for a job well done, as well as training and development programs for employees. Westin also offers additional perks to their employees including greatly discounted stays at other Westin Hotels, restaurant outlets and Starwood partner discounts.
