Wine Stewards

This position may also be called: Bar Waiter or Bar Waitress

The Wine Steward on a cruise ship helps passengers to know which wines would go good with a meal to make it the ideal and complete dining experience. They are considered the expert in wines in the restaurant and they will also answer any questions pertaining about the various wines.

Another name for a Wine Steward is sommelier, and it is their responsibility to have a thorough knowledge about wines and winemaking, including history, wine products and types, and various vineyards. It is also part of their job to:

  • Inventory
  • Order
  • Keep the wine cellar stocked.
  • Promote and sell wine to the guests
  • Make a commission on the sales.

The requirements of a cruise ship Wine Steward are that you must have a minimum of three years’ experience in a five-star fine dining restaurant. Preferably, you should also have wine selling skills. Having good social skills is a must, and so is having excellent English, and knowing additional languages is a plus.

Compensation: $2,500 – $3,500 a month
