General Cooks

This position may also be called: Cook, Assistant Cook, Fourth Cook, Crew Cook, Cook Trainee

A cruise ship often has many different cooks, but a General Cook is one who cooks and prepares the food that he or she is directed to. It is usually a support position and on the job training is given – often in a specialized department.

The General Cook is responsible to cook or prepare food as directed by their supervisors. Food preparation will follow precise recipes, and will be presented in styles as directed. They will also:

  • Prepare various stations such as buffets, carving stations, etc.
  • Transport food to the stations.
  • Follow established cleaning procedures.

In order to qualify for the position of General Cook on a cruise ship, you will first need to have at least one year of experience in a resort, hotel, or cruise ship. You will also need to know how to use and clean various galley equipment, have good English, and be a High School graduate. Some positions will require that you be a graduate from a Culinary School.
