Bar Managers

May also be called: Beverage Director, Head Bartender, Assistant Bar Manager

The quality of service and the smooth operation of every bar on board a cruise ship is the responsibility of the Bar Manager. This includes the public bars and lounges, the crew bar, and all beverage service.

The Bar Manager is responsible for the efficient operation of the bars on board, and must be able to predict the future needs of beverages to ensure that passengers always have what they want – not only in the bars, but in the restaurants, too. They ensure proper training of the bar employees, and make sure that they follow the safety rules, have the necessary licenses, manages the budget and seeks to improve profitability, and pays the salaries.

When applying for a Bar Manager position, you can expect to need to have at least four or more years of beverage experience working on a cruise ship or with a five-star hotel or resort. You will also need to have a H.S. Diploma or GED, and must speak, read and write English very well. You will also need to be strong enough to do lifting and carrying.
