Youth Counselors

This position may also be called: Youth Activities Coordinator or Youth Staff

Adults who go on cruises will often bring their children along. They also want to be alone some and enjoy the activities available for adults – which mean that the children need to have their own Youth Counselors and special activities designed just for them. These crew members make sure that the children have many memorable activities, too, and that they are kept busy doing many fun things.

In Focus: Youth Staff

A Youth Activities Coordinator and Youth Staff are responsible to help carry out all the programs designed for youth, which will often range between 2 and 17. They should be able and willing to work with between 600 to 1,000 children – but only during the summer cruises. They need to be friendly, love children, and be able to talk to parents and passengers. Need to speak excellent English, and having additional languages are preferred. Some ships may require:

  • Two years of previous experience.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Know CPR.
  • Possess a First Aid Certificate.

Individuals that want to be considered for the position of Youth Staff need to be high energy and able to keep children entertained. You need to be able to teach a class, host an event, escort children on tours, possibly be a babysitter, and come up with ideas for children’s programs. The hours are long. Contracts will usually be for the summer months, and possibly more.
