Quartermasters

The Quartermaster primarily works on the bridge and is responsible to navigate the ship safely. They help to steer the ship during their watch, monitor various instruments, and will also ensure that deck equipment is in working order.

The position of Quartermaster is often a supervisory role. They will also maintain the equipment used for loading and unloading of the ship. Other tasks of the Quarter Master include:

  • Prepares and updates the navigational charts as needed.
  • Responsible for navigational instruments, compasses, and clocks.
  • Trains the lookouts for the ship and new helmsman.
  • Plots the ship’s position and heading and maintains direction toward it.
  • Maintains the ship’s log of significant events.
  • Secures classified material on bridge.
  • Operate tenders in emergency situations.

The Quartermaster position is not an actual rank, so no specific rank qualifications are necessary. They need to have a degree from maritime school, and be licensed as a Tender Captain. Also need experience and a good command of English.

Compensation: $2,000 – $3,000 a month DOE
