The service and hospitality positions are broken into four different departments, Food and Beverage, Hotel Administration, Purser and Housekeeping. These roles are vital to the passenger's happiness.

The Food and Beverage staff have the opportunity to make some great tips! The gratuities the staff receive from the passengers compensates for the low wages. This department can work in a variety of atmospheres, formal, casual, in a nightclub or at the Captain's Ball. This department is a great way to break in the cruise line industry especially for those who are looking for advancement.

The Hotel Administration staff is very much like a hotel staff at a land resort or hotel. These positions make sure that passenger's accommodation are taken care of and in excellent condition. Many people with former hotel or hospitality positions on land prefer to occupy these positions.

The Purser department is the "accounting" department of the ship. The purser department manages passenger's accounts, tickets, currency exchange and much more.

The Housekeeping department is always behind the scenes but makes the entire ship worth living or staying on. The housekeepers are very busy keeping the ship "ship shape."

The following positions are in the four departments described above. Positions are followed by a brief job description, job requirements and compensation. Please note that compensation varies throughout cruise lines and the amounts stated here are meant to act simply as a reference. Also note, that in most cases all of your standard living expenses will be covered (room, food, health coverage, etc.), so most of the money you earn can be saved.

Accountant

The Accountant for the Hotel Department works directly under the supervision of the Hotel Manager. This position is in charge of the auditing as well as accounting duties such as inventory control, calculating supply cost etc.

Baker

Assists in the preparation and baking of all baked goods under the direct supervision of the Pastry & Bakery Supervisor. Performs duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Bar Back

Assists the bartender and is chiefly responsible for keeping the bar clean and stocked for service.

Bar Manager

Most passengers look forward to the alcoholic drinks onboard. The Bar Manager makes sure that those he/she manages is knowledgeable in the art of making drinks. In addition the Bar Manager makes sure the bar operations including costs and revenues are accounted for and running smoothly.

Bartender

The bartender should be knowledgeable in the art of making drinks. In addition to mixing drinks most people have adopted the stereotype that bartenders are there to listen, therefore it is imperative for bartenders to have good social skills to converse with passengers.The Bartender manages liquor and supply and provides general maintenance of the bar and lounge areas.

Bellman

The Bellman is responsible for delivering messages, providing room service and handling luggage as a valet.

Buffet Server

Buffet servers are the food attendants and servers at the cruise lines buffets. This job sets up the buffet, clears tables and restocks the buffet line with food when necessary.

Butcher

The Butcher is in charge of the meat on board, including making sure quality and sanitation codes are applied.

Busboy

Assist waiters and waitress in serving meals, clearing tables and delivering food and drinks.

Cabin Steward

The cabin steward is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of a delegated amount of passenger's cabins. The Cabin Steward changes sheets, makes beds, cleans bathrooms, washes windows, vacuums floors etc. In addition this position can be assigned public areas to clean as well.

Chef de Partie

Prepares and produced gourmet cuisine and sauces. The Chef de Partie manages food displays on buffets and in restaurants. Very knowledgeable in international cuisine and has an eye for creating new dishes to correspond with theme meals etc. Learn all about cruise ship chef jobs as a member.

Chief Cabin Steward

This position works directly with the Chief Steward/Housekeeper. The Chief Cabin Steward inspects and evaluates the work performed by the Cabin Stewards in a delegated area of passenger's cabins and assigned public areas.

Chief Purser

The Chief Purser is a senior officer and is responsible for all accounting and finances on board. All revenues made on board from gift shop sales to casino revenue is accounted for by this role. In addition the Chief Purser supervises the Purser staff and oversees payroll and passenger refunds and/or exchanges. The Chief Purser is in charge of crew passports and visas. Other ares such as passenger's safety boxes, currency exchange, immigrations and customs and passenger credit accounts all fall under the supervision of the Chief Purser.

Chief Steward/Housekeeper

The Chief Steward/Housekeeper supervises the housekeeping staff and oversees the quality of cleanliness provided on board. In addition this position regulates and accounts for cleaning supplies and care of equipment used. Room service, cabin service and bell service are also under the supervision of this role. The Chief Steward/Housekeeper reports to the Hotel Manager.

Cocktail Server

Serves alcoholic beverages in the bar and lounges on board.

Computer Systems Manager/ IT Manager

As technology advances this role has become more important to the overall operations of a cruise ship. The Computer Systems Manager maintains that the computer functions and their networks are functioning properly. Troubleshooting and assistance in implementing new systems are also handled by this position. This role also acts as a supervisor to the IT staff.

Dining Room Head Waiter

This position is a managerial position that assists the Dining Room Manager supervise the wait staff. In addition the Head Waiter is in charge of a large section of the dinner room and is assigned to large or VIP parties.

Dining Room Manager

The Dining Room Manager supervises the entire dining room wait staff and is responsible for the overall operation of the dining room.

Executive Chef

The Executive chef is the number one "go to" person when it comes to food. This role is responsible for every aspect of food service operation which include administrative responsibilities. The Executive Chef supervises all of the kitchen staff, make sure that food and kitchen are up to code with Centers of Disease Control's regulations. Acts as a quality control for all food that leaves the kitchen.

Food and Beverage Manager

The Food and Beverage Manager is in charge of the management of all areas of the ship that serve food and beverages. In addition this position budgets food costs and calculates expenditures etc. The overall quality of the food and beverage served on the ship is under this person's control. The Food and Beverages Manager is also in charge of food orders in bulk.

General Cook

The General Cook handles food preparation and cooking responsibilities as designated by supervisors of this role.

Gift Shop Manager

Supervises the gift shop and staff. In addition this position is responsible for selling gift shop merchandise while providing good customer service. Accounts for inventory and shop supplies, stocking, window displays and re-shelving.

Gift Shop Sales Assistant

Hotel Manager

The Hotel Manager supervises all hotel operations on board the ship. Direct contact with passengers requires a courteous and accommodating behavior. The Hotel Manager makes sure that the high standards of the guests are met reflecting the company's professionalism and service. This role trains and manages the hotel staff. In addition the Hotel Manager supervises the fiscal operations that have to do with the the hotel operations and communicate with the Captain all problems that concern the hotel operations.

IT Staff

Laundry Staff

The laundry staff collect and gather items to be washed. In addition they are responsible for washing and dry cleaning. The laundry staff are in charge of laundry equipment and supplies.

Maitre d' Hotel

The Maitre d' is the position that hold him/herself and the restaurant staff she/he supervises to high quality food service standards. Most Maitre d's hold a significant amount of pride in their work and strive to provide their guests with a top notch dining experience. The Maitre d' trains the staff to serve with high standards. The Maitre d' reports to the Food and Beverage Manager.

Pastry Chef

The Pastry Chef prepares and produces pastries and desserts on board the ship. The Pastry Chef may or may not have a staff. If the Pastry Chef has a staff to assist then he/she is responsible for the pastry staff supervision. In addition to the above the Pastry Chef is responsible for the display and presentation of the pastries and desserts that are served. Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator updates the ship's intranet, produces and writes the daily newsletter as needed.

Purser Staff

The purser staff performs the duties the front desk in a hotel lobby perform. The purser staff are considered officers and must report to the chief purser. The purser staff is trained in immigration and customs laws and is responsible for all the documents and papers needed for traveling. They also establish and manage passenger's accounts, overall revenue accumulated on board. All financial matters are dealt with by the purser staff. In addition to their administrative duties the purser staff handles passenger's complaints, room exchanges, acts as a liaison between the passengers and crew.

Receptionist

The Receptionist checks passengers in and out of their quarters. This position settles accounts at the end of the cruise and handles passenger's complaints.

Sous Chef

The Sous Chef works closely with the Executive Chef. In charge of maintaining food quality that is served. Performs food preparation and cooking responsibilities as delegated by the Executive Chef.

Wine Steward

The Wine Steward is vastly knowledgeable about wine and wine culture. The Wine Steward makes suggestions on the menu or by request about which wine would enhance what meal. This position is required to provide a high quality service to the passengers. This position should be able to answer a plethora of questions regarding wine making, history, formalities and products.
