As of 2013, there were no specific certifications or training needed to become a deckhand other than basic safety training that meets the STCW 2010 (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) requirements. All yacht crew members, no matter what their position, are required to take this training, primarily because it involves performing muster. Muster is the drill that is required onboard all ships prior to setting sail. Like a fire drill, the goal of muster is to practice safe evacuation in the event of an emergency. The STCW 2010 requirements training is offered by most quality yachting crew training schools and maritime schools. It is usually a five-day training class.
