CruiseJobFinder interviewed Marie G., who spent 6 years working as a hairdresser on several cruise ships, including: Carnival<\/a>‘s Carnivale, Mardi Gras, and Ecstasy; P&O<\/a>‘s Sea Princess and Canberra. Marie was employed by Steiner<\/a>, a large concessionaire with salon and spa services on approximately 100 cruise ships. She is a British citizen residing in Australia.<\/p>\n

Where did you work before going to sea? <\/p>\n

I trained as a hairdresser after finishing secondary school at 16 and have been working in the industry for 24 years.<\/p>\n

What made you want to work in the cruise industry? <\/p>\n

I wanted to travel and still work at the same time.<\/p>\n

What related experience did you have prior to being hired? <\/p>\n

I’d been hairdressing for four years beforehand.<\/p>\n

Where did you first hear about this job? <\/p>\n

I was aware of it when I started my hairdressing training.<\/p>\n

Did you apply for this job specifically or for several different opportunities? <\/p>\n

For this one only, as Steiner have the concession on most of the cruise ships for hairdressers.<\/p>\n

What were the job requirements? <\/p>\n

They were looking for qualified hairdressers who were confident in doing hair up.<\/p>\n

What was the interview process like for this position? <\/p>\n

About 25 people were gathered in a room and everyone had a chance to get up and talk about themselves in front of the group. Then the interviewers picked who they want and we did a trade test that afternoon.<\/p>\n

Can you remember any of the questions they asked you? <\/p>\n

Not really, they more wanted to see how you spoke in public.<\/p>\n
