First Officers

This position is also called: Navigation Officer

The First Officer is considered a Watchkeeping Officer and answers directly to the Captain, and also to the Staff Captain. During their watch, they are in charge of the bridge, and ensure that all bridge operations and navigational equipment are functioning properly.

It is the job of the First Officer to ensure that the ship’s operations meet the standards for safety, security and environment, and that all indicator panels and alarms are constantly being watched. They also:

  • Ensures bridge discipline.
  • Maintains all navigational equipment, lights, emergency signaling equipment, lifeboats and life vests.
  • Keep in contact with gangway guards in port.
  • Reports significant events during watch to Captain.
  • May also be assigned other tasks as needed.

Qualifications for the First Officer include graduation from a recognized maritime school. Candidates will also need to have a minimum of three to five-years’ experience in subordinate positions, and much experience in navigations systems and computerized equipment. Also needs to have fluent English – spoken and written, and strong management skills.

Compensation: $2,500 – $5,000 a month DOE
