Please describe what your company does. What is your role in the staffing process?
Dorset Cruises offers local cruises of from Poole Quay out to Brownsea Island and Old Harry's Rocks. We offer evening and day cruises which include scenic cruises, party cruises including Christmas cruises and Fireworks Cruises, as well as BBQ cruises, and sunset cruises. We also have a vintage 1938-built wooden boat that we offer special, historic cruises on. I assist in the staffing process.
Describe a typical 'cruise' if there is such a thing. What would the shipboard experience be like for a typical employee?
The typical shipboard experience would consist of cleaning and preparing the vessel, stocking it and then seeing to the guests when they arrive. Crew will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the vessel on the cruise, see to the guests, provide service or entertainment, and see them safely back to port a few hours later.
Do you have a 'season' or 'seasons' where you're busiest?
May to September is usually the busiest being summer, but Christmas and New Year are also popular times.
Do you have a lot of university students working for you?
Yes we do, they prefer the part time, flexible employment.
What advice can you offer about CVs?
Make sure that your CV is current with up-to-date contact details and your very latest employment added to it. This is a common mistake that people make. They give in the same old CV all the time, without bothering to read over it and make any changes or updates to it.
Are there any common traits people should have in order to get hired, and then to succeed in the cruise industry?
Cruising is all about being at sea and enjoying marine life. You must be a sea person, as well as a people person to make a career out of cruising. It is all about balancing an energetic personality with a relaxing and calm nature to make people's cruise that much more enjoyable. You must be efficient, but calm; friendly, but well mannered.
What type of person gravitates towards these jobs?
We get all sorts. This is the type of job that everyone wants to do at least once, so we get those who are students looking for a fun holiday job, and the more serious crew who want to make a career out of cruising.
