Carnival Cruise Lines is a British-American owned company with a head office in Miami. It was founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, and is now one of 11 cruise ship brands that is in the Carnival Corporation & PLC family of companies.
Carnival Cruise Lines has the distinction of having the largest fleet in the company group, and it has over 20 vessels in operation. The ships that make up the Carnival Cruise Lines fleet are designed for short-term getaways at sea. Known as "Fun Ships," they feature a number of activities on board.
In 1996, the Carnival Destiny, measuring 101,000 tons, was the largest passenger ship in the world. In 2009, Carnival Cruise Lines launched the Carnival Dream, which measured 130,000 gross tons. The Dream was first deployed for cruises in the Mediterranean, and as of December 2009, she was sailing from Cape Canaveral to the Caribbean weekly. The Dream's sister ship, the Carnival Magic, set sail in June of 2011.
